Why is Lister’s tubercle important in wrist ultrasound?
Lister’s tubercle is a key bony landmark on the dorsal radius that helps you orient quickly in wrist ultrasound. It sits between extensor compartment 2 (thumb side) and compartment 3, making it a reliable reference point when identifying and confirming extensor tendons.
A practical way to find Lister’s tubercle is to start higher on the dorsal forearm in the transverse plane. Identify the smooth hyperechoic surface of the radius, then slowly slide the probe distally toward the wrist. As you approach the distal radius, a bony bump appears—that’s Lister’s tubercle. Once you see it, compartments 2 and 3 are immediately on either side, giving you a clear map to continue the exam.
