Why should you zoom before tracing a nerve on ultrasound?

Zooming the image makes small but important details easier to see when measuring a nerve. Without zoom, the perineurial border can look faint or broken, which makes it harder to trace accurately and increases the chance of over- or under-estimating the cross-sectional area.

Freezing the image first gives you a stable frame, then zooming enlarges the nerve so the bright rim appears sharp and continuous. This makes it easier to place your trace just inside the perineurium with confidence. Zoom doesn’t add time or require new equipment—it simply improves precision by letting you see the boundary you’re trying to measure.
